Augment Your Allies' Power with New Potion Bombs in The War Within
The War Within

In The War Within, Engineers will be able to craft Potion Bombs, powerful external potion buffs that augment small groups of players within range. These Potion Bombs currently come in three different types: DPS, Movement Speed, and Healing.
Using a Potion Bomb is simple - use it as you would any other consumable, choose your target area, and buff your allies while damaging enemies caught in the radius. While Engineers are the only ones able to produce these new support consumables, anyone - even non-Engineers - can use them to help their group.
Blizzard described these new consumables in their recent
Alpha Notes for The War Within
:
ENGINEERING
Potion Bombs are a selection of new items that possess the power budget and share the cooldown of ordinary combat potions and can be used anywhere that potions are allowed. When thrown, they deal a small amount of damage split between all enemies caught in the blast but more importantly provide a small buff to up to 5 allies also caught in the blast. The potency of this buff is the budget of the potion divided by 5 – even if fewer than 5 targets are hit. This is intended to be a considerable potion option for support-oriented players, or those who feel their personal potion for the fight is less impactful than a boost distributed between their allies.
While these Potion Bombs represent an interesting and experimental new take on consumables, they also represent yet another foray into external cooldowns in group play. Spells like
Придание сил
have
long been the subject of frustration
among the player base, and the Augmentation Evoker Class was designed in a way that brings external cooldowns and buffs to the forefront. The sheer power involved with these externals for players makes them required in many instances of high-end play, while a very vocal segment of the player base advocates for their removal altogether.
High-end play in World of Warcraft requires an incredible amount of coordination between large groups of players. These Potion Bombs are unlikely to reduce the coordination needed - in fact, they're likely to
increase
the complexity of group play. Recipients of the Potion Bomb buff do not have their own potions go on cooldown, only the caster - meaning that it's possible, with the right setup, for a raid group to use multiple Potion Bombs in a row on the same group of DPS, timed with their cooldowns, and then have those players activate their own potions for yet another buff. While it remains to be seen whether this is optimal gameplay, there will almost certainly be sims that indicate certain classes are better off buffing others instead of themselves, leading to a "Potion Bomb meta" similar to other player-enforced group behaviors we've seen in the past.
Many players have argued in the past for more support-based roles, and this does prove an interesting experiment to see how that could potentially be provided as a playstyle option. The full power of these Potion Bombs remains to be seen for the time being - we'll just have to see how sims work out to know how widespread their use will be in The War Within.
